BMA’s conference on “Managing Common Property Resources – A focus on forestry” on the 29th and 30th of October discussed the different aspects and ways of how to manage the Common Property Resources, not only in the field of forestry, but also in case of water bodies.
On 29 October 2009, the inaugural session started with a welcome message by Dr. Ashton Harris. Our key note speaker Rajen Varada from the United Nations Solutions Exchange Programme gave his talk on forestry and why we should care about forests. Dr. Yamini Narayanan spoke on Common Property Resources explaining from the economic point of view.
The next session was on Deforestation, which was chaired by Dr. Debasis Chakraborthy, Professor at IIFT. The two speakers in this session were Moirangthem Prakash Singh from IRMA, Anand, who spoke on ‘Jhum cultivation and Deforestation’; and Dr. Soumyendra Kishore Datta from Burdwan University, Burdwan, West Bengal who spoke on “Forest Dependence and Depletion: Socio-Economic Analaysis of FPC Members in the Bankura District of West Bengal”. The third session of the day was on Regional issues chaired by Mr. Sandip Das, Special Correspondent, Financial Express. This was the session where all faculty were present.
There were three speakers for this session. Dr. Sunil D Santha from Department of Social Work, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, Clappana, Kollam, Kerala spoke on “Dynamics Sustainability of Common Pool Resources: A Case Study on the Management of Sacred Groves in Kerala”; Dr. Ashok Alur, from ICRISAT, Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh spoke on “Traditional institutional mechanisms for the management of common property resources – a case from Karnataka” and Ozmond Roshan D’Souza from Department of Political Science, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad spoke on “Intra-Community Conflict Resolution Mechanism and the Role of Social Capital: Lessons from a Joint Forest Planning and Management Project in Karnataka”.
On 30 October 2009, the day started with a talk by Mousumi Majumdar, who spoke about the “Revolutionizing the approach of forest management”. This was followed by a presentation by Dr. Amir Ullah Khan on “Forestry: The regulatory environment-A case study on Bamboo”. The next session included the students of our SMDP (Student Management Development Programme) class, where Mr. Ramesh Govindan, an entrepreneur with profound interest in wild life photography and tiger addressed students on “Project Tiger”.
The following session was on the theme of Governance, which was chaired by Dr. Yamini Narayanan. The first speaker was Mr. K K Kaushal (IFS), Executive Director (Environment) Lok Kalyan Mandal; New Delhi spoke on “Restoring Indian Forests though Microfinance”. The next speaker David Cook of the Edith Cowan University, Australia spoke on “E-Governance of the Forest: Management by Multivalence”. The third speaker was Dr. Naseer Jaffer form Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship, Bangalore on “Managing common property- a focus on forestry with special reference to Tamil Nadu”. The conference ended with a request to participants that they submit their final paper by the end of November 2009 so that BMA could bring out the conference papers in the form of an edited volume early next year.
